Should I buy the Canon R6 Mark II now or wait for Cyber Monday?

So I've been shooting with my old 5D Mark IV for literally years and it's been a beast but I'm finally ready to go mirrorless because the eye autofocus on the R6 Mark II looks insane and I'm just so hyped to finally get my hands on it. I’ve saved up about $2,400 specifically for this—well, maybe a bit more if I sell some of my EF glass—and I’m really itching to pull the trigger like right now. I have this big indoor wedding shoot for my cousin in mid-December in Chicago and I really want to have the camera in my hands at least a couple weeks before then to get used to the menus and the new dial layout because I know it’s a bit different from the DSLR setup. But then I realized Cyber Monday is just a few weeks away and I'm torn because if I could save even like $300 or get a free battery grip or something that would be huge for my budget. I've seen some rumors that Canon might do a bundle deal or maybe just a straight discount but I'm also worried about stock levels since everyone else is gonna be looking for the same thing... actually maybe stock isn't an issue anymore? I don't know. Do you think the potential savings are gonna be worth the wait or should I just buy it today so I can start practicing for the wedding?

  • Wait for Cyber Monday cuz the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body usually drops by $300 or more which is HUGE for your budget.
  • Check the Canon refurbished site specifically since they lowkey have the deepest discounts and you dont wanna miss those savings.
  • Buying right now is just throwing money away tbh.

I've been through three R-series bodies since the R launched. Like someone mentioned, the interface transition takes time.

  • Canon EOS R6 Mark II: Best all-rounder. Dual slots and IBIS are mandatory for weddings.
  • Canon EOS R8: Same AF and sensor, but the weak battery and single slot are dealbreakers for paid gigs. Buy the R6 II now. A small discount isn't worth the risk of being unprepared for a wedding.

So funny you ask this — last summer I was losing my mind trying to time a purchase before a big trip and ngl the way these companies handle sales is such a SCAM. I totally agree with what everyone is saying about the timing being risky but honestly its ridiculous how we even have to deal with this. Like you spend literal thousands on a setup and they still want to squeeze you for every penny while the build quality feels like its just getting more plasticky every year? It drives me crazy how brands like Canon and Sony just gatekeep the basic features behind these massive paywalls and then the deals are barely a discount anyway. Its lowkey insulting that we gotta gamble on shipping times just to save a tiny bit on gear that should probably cost less to begin with. The whole system is just rigged to make us feel FOMO and im so over it tbh. Its just one big headache after another with these prices and the constant stress of waiting for a drop that might not even happen.

Rarely post but saw this and had to chime in because the jump from a 5D Mark IV to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body is way bigger than you think and waiting for a sale might actually mess you up for that Chicago wedding. Ngl the eye AF is total magic but the way you interact with the camera is different enough that you dont wanna be fumbling in a dark church. Heres why you should just pull the trigger now:

  • The AF menus are way more complex than the 5D4 and you need time to map your custom buttons so they feel like muscle memory.
  • The electronic viewfinder is a whole different vibe and takes a few days for your eyes to adjust if youve been shooting optical for years.
  • If you wait for Cyber Monday and shipping gets delayed or you get a dud unit you are basically SCREWED for that mid-December date.
  • You gotta test your old EF glass with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to make sure everything communicates right before a big gig. Honestly $200 in savings isnt worth the stress of potentially blowing a cousins wedding because you were still figuring out tracking sensitivity settings. tbh if you really want a deal just look for a bundle that includes the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery because mirrorless eats power way faster than your old DSLR ever did and you will definitely need like three for a full day shoot... just get it now and start practicing.

Re: "Rarely post but saw this and had to..."

  • Saw this and had to chime in cuz I dont post much but reliability is literally EVERYTHING for a wedding gig and honestly waiting for a sale is a gamble you cant afford. If you buy during the Cyber Monday chaos, you risk shipping delays or even getting a dud unit with zero time to exchange it before the Chicago trip.
  • You need to test your EF glass on the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to ensure the focus speed is actually consistent across your lenses.
  • Mirrorless eats power way faster than your 5D4 so you gotta stress test your setup and see how many shots you actually get.
  • Youll want SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-II SDXC cards to handle the faster burst rates without the camera locking up. Saving $300 isnt worth the stress of a gear failure or a missed shot cuz you were still learning the AF tracking. Just pull the trigger.

Buy the camera now. Waiting for Cyber Monday leaves too small a window for testing. Just make sure you run a full diagnostic on the sensor and card slots as soon as it arrives. If you get a defective unit during the holiday rush, shipping delays will likely prevent an exchange before the wedding. Two questions to help clarify your needs:

  • Are you keeping the 5D Mark IV as a dedicated backup body, or is this a full replacement?
  • Have you double-checked if your equipment insurance policy covers mirrorless hardware for professional use in another state?
