do you guys think the canon rf lenses are gonna go on like super deep discount for cyber monday 2026? i know thats a long way off but i just got an eos r8 and im honestly so lost with all the different numbers and letters, sorry if this is a really dumb question but i have no idea where to even start looking. i really want to take better pictures of my dog at the park which i guess is kinda like wildlife? and maybe some travel stuff too but everything is just so expensive and i spent most of my budget on the camera body itself so i dont have much left. im really hoping to find a deal on like a zoom lens or whatever they call them, i think its rf? or maybe r? im still learning lol. i keep seeing people talk about black friday deals but cyber monday seems better sometimes and i dont want to mess up and pay full price if i can avoid it because im literally a complete beginner and i dont want to waste money on the wrong thing... do lenses even go on sale that much or is it mostly just the cameras themselves?

Look, I’ve spent 25 years turning wrenches and I’ve learned one thing: buy the right tool once. I wasted plenty of money on cheap glass that couldn't track a dog to save its life. Listen, your R8 needs something with a real motor if you want results.

  • Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM: This is high-end equipment. It’s compact for travel and the autofocus is instant. It is pricey even on sale, but it won’t fail you.
  • Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM: It is cheaper and sharp for stationary shots. The motor is slow. It will hunt and miss if the dog is moving fast at the park. Stop worrying about 2026. Get the right gear now or you are just wasting time.

Cyber Monday is mostly marketing noise. You rarely see more than 10% or 15% off current RF glass. Retailers often hike the "base price" in October so the November "discount" looks better than it actually is. Waiting until 2026 to save a hundred bucks is a mistake. Lenses hold their value because the tech doesn't change much. Cameras are like smartphones—they depreciate fast. That is why you see big camera body sales but tiny lens discounts.

  • Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM: This is the real all-in-one tool. Everyone recommends carrying three different lenses, but for travel and a dog park, this range is unbeatable. It usually drops to around $799 during holiday sales.
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: Don't wait for a sale on this. It is around $170. Even a "deep" discount only saves you $20. It is much better for dog portraits with blurry backgrounds than any budget zoom.
  • By 2026, look at Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. Canon finally opened the mount to third parties. This will likely be cheaper and perform better in low light than Canon's own non-L zooms. Buy used now. The "new" price on Cyber Monday 2026 will still be higher than the used price today. You are missing two years of photos waiting for a small coupon.

I have been through three mount transitions with Canon. Discounts on RF glass follow a predictable pattern. You will rarely see deep discounts exceeding 15% on brand-new lenses. The most aggressive pricing occurs on the Canon Refurbished store, where I have seen prices drop 30% to 40% during holiday windows. For a dog at the park and general travel on an R8, focus on these points:

  • Mount compatibility. Use RF lenses. Your R8 is full-frame. Avoid RF-S lenses as they are designed for smaller sensors and will crop your image significantly.
  • Reach for movement. For a dog running, you need focal length. Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is the standard budget choice. It is lightweight for travel and fast enough for outdoor daylight.
  • General utility. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is often bundled as a kit lens. I tried the early versions years ago and they were mediocre, but the current RF STM versions are sharp for the price. Lenses hold value better than bodies. A camera body is a computer that depreciates fast. A lens is glass that lasts a decade. Do not expect 2026 to bring massive price crashes unless Canon releases Mark II versions of existing lenses. Watch the refurbished site specifically on the Tuesday before Cyber Monday.
