Just got a Canon R100 and I'm super confused about what lenses I actually need. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm a total beginner and have no idea where to start. I really want to take better bird photos and some travel shots but everything seems so pricey.

Requirements:

  • Needs to work with R100
  • Good for wildlife/birds
  • Budget friendly
  • Easy for a newbie

Are there any leaked Canon RF lens discounts for Cyber Monday 2026 yet? I'm hoping to save some money.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the refurbished store consistently beats Cyber Monday "leaks" which are usually marketing fluff for overstock. Everyone recommends the 100-400mm, but for birds, it lacks necessary reach. On your R100, the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM provides a 1280mm equivalent field of view. This allows you to fill the frame without heavy cropping. The R100 sensor lacks the resolution to crop deeply and maintain detail. For travel, skip the prime lenses. The Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM replaces three of the lenses mentioned above. It covers wide-angle to moderate telephoto in one unit. Swapping lenses while traveling is inefficient and invites sensor dust. TL;DR: Ignore the 100-400mm hype. Get the Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM for reach and the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM for travel.

Look, those zooms are okay, but listen: 1. Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM — Great reach, slow aperture.

  • Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM — Compact travel, no zoom. Fixed glass lasts longer.

tbh i am no expert but i literally just looked into this last week because i was in the same boat with my r100... it can be so overwhelming. i havent seen any "official" leaks for cyber monday 2026 yet but canon usually does massive sales on their stm lenses around then. if you wanna do birds without spending thousands look at these:

  • Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM - super budget friendly and lightweight for travel but might be a bit short for tiny birds.
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM - this is the one everyone recommends for wildlife. its more expensive but way better reach and totally worth saving for.
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM - get this for travel shots if you want that blurry background look... its cheap as chips. honestly just keep an eye on the canon refurbished store bc thats where the REAL steals happen... im still trying to figure it all out too lol.
